Working out is by definition "hard to do." It is a combination of both mental and physical endurance; the age-old adage of "mind over matter." Our bodies are capable of so much more than we tend to believe. They can do truly amazing things when we allow ourselves to break boundaries and cross finish lines. Often, the biggest obstacle to working out is just getting oneself to the gym or park as we fight to quiet the parade of excuses dancing in our heads. But once there, once committed, we have no choice but to dive into the breathy rhythm of the movement.
For me, working out is more than wanting to look a certain way. It is a necessity for my own happiness; the medicine that keeps depression at bay, and allows me to be an artist without the classic accompanying temperament. I need it like I need sunshine and water and air, but I didn't always realize this. It took me most of my young-adulthood to truly understand its importance... and the stability with which it must be practiced. To be fair, I have "off" days where I mess up or don't want to do the work, but that's okay, too. I don't punish myself for indulging in chocolate or missing a day. I just try to get back into it the next one. It's a daily practice and not an end-goal. It is not always easy, but it is always worth it.
My Mantras to Stick to My Routine:
1) Try to sweat every day.
- Inside or out, long or short, just do some kind of exercise every day.
2) No scales.
- Don't bother weighing yourself. It really is just a number. Go by how you feel / how your clothes fit.
3) Eat well.
- What you put into your body matters. Treat it well, and it will be so.
Here's to a very happy and healthy 2014!
